Who do you live with?

My wife Helen, our eldest son Finn (12), youngest son Louis (10), Rafi our schnauzer-Jack Russell cross and, for the past two years, Ashley (25), a Canadian girl who arrived as our au pair and is now very much part of the family.

How long have you lived in your home and what attracted you to it?

We initially moved in as renters in 2013 and purchased the house a few years later. We loved how close it is to the beach and the spacious bedrooms and extra room downstairs which was important as we’ve always had live-in au pairs. Our house is a former shop from the 1930s so it has a lot of character.

What is it about your home that makes you feel at ease?

Although we are street-front our home feels very private. We love the entrance with its long, wide corridor and floor-to-ceiling doors. We also like the colour of the walls which our interior designer recommended as it has a very calming effect. We love the garden, too – it’s compact but is very sheltered, green and sunny.

Describe your perfect Sunday at home:

I love to cook a late Sunday lunch, put on some good music and finish with a family board game or competitive game of cards.

What is your favourite room and why?

Aside from the kitchen, I love my office which has French doors opening out to the garden. The office contains my collection of cookbooks and two comfortable reading chairs so I love to sit and read and relax in there.

Tell us about your interior design style:

I like elegant simplicity and a feeling of being close to the beach. Having spent a number of years in New York, I wanted to incorporate touches of a Hamptons beach house and I think we have done this.

When it comes to home aesthetics, do you prefer luxury, new or vintage finds?

I like to combine luxury, new and vintage. For me, the luxury items are the appliances in the kitchen such as my Wolf ovens and Sub-Zero fridge and freezer. The new items are furniture such as our bespoke leather ottoman, and vintage is the antique copper pots and barware.

What is your favourite functional or decorative feature and what is special about it?

I love my desk which is a mid-century piece. As well as being beautifully finished, it’s also very functional.
