Mahana Villa; luxury Tasman lodge

DATE 15th May 2019

A spectacular union of glass, steel, wood and art; Mahana Villa is the embodiment of 'luxury lodge'. It offers a small slice of Europe with a dash of Californian flair and only 30 minutes from Nelson.

Sister property to the Mahana vineyard; the Villa, vineyard and winery were developed in the early 2000’s by an American entrepreneur, bringing a European approach to viticulture and wine making and a Californian approach to luxury and aesthetics. The outcome was the fabulous Mahana Estate, known globally for outstanding wines, wonderful cuisine, boutique luxury accommodation and a premier New Zealand art collection.

Things change, however, and the vineyard and winery were sold in 2018 to a Kiwi investment company that owns several of New Zealand’s best known smaller wine makers. The Villa is separately for sale and it will be quite a prize for the buyer.

Nestled on its own two hectares, there are very few houses of this quality. It’s a prominent example of Pacific Modernism architecture with an extraordinary indoor-outdoor connection. The phrase “indoor outdoor flow” does not even come close to describing it. Slide back the glass walls and the suites become elegant, light filled platforms to look out over the mountains, sea and vines.

The Villa was designed as a luxury lodge, with seven luxury bedroom suites in total, and contemporary shared spaces including a gourmet kitchen, dining area, lounge, temperature controlled wine cellar, gallery and library. The 1,052 sq m (approx) home is built to the highest specifications. Each room and area offers a pleasing aesthetic- elegance, cool modernism, warmth, aspects and facilities. And some of the art remains- fabulous sculptures, carvings and murals.

The Villa’s next life could go in several directions. It could be a fabulous home or holiday home, a prestige mansion with low maintenance grounds and the surrounding vines managed by the vineyard operators. Alternatively, it is already purpose built to be outstanding boutique accommodation.

Marketed as seven bedrooms and central entertaining, or as a villa and two separate apartments, it has everything required for the ultimate guest experience: stunning views and luxurious suites right in the centre of the Nelson Tasman region with nature at its finest, great shopping, eateries, arts and activities.

Attend the Open Day Sunday 19th May 1pm - 3pm. Contact John Bampfylde or Kylie Jones for more information.
