NZSIR's favourite training trails

DATE 17th Aug 2020

‘Wellbeing’ is no buzzword to the New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty team.

We take our title sponsorship of Queenstown Marathon seriously. With many of us preparing for the big events, here’s six of our favourite training trails from around the country.

Sawpit Gully, Arrowtown

Blog lago

A steep but rewarding trail through native bush and open grassland. A local favourite, the 7.2 kilometre loop features varied terrain, creek crossings and stunning backcountry views. Laura Reidy, our resident ultra-marathon runner, says its “great bang for buck” as walking or running, you can’t escape a good workout.

The Mount, Tauranga

Lux Beech

Luke Nobilo from our Tauranga office says “if you’re prepared to sweat and feel the legs burn, a run to the summit of Mauao (Mount Maunganui) will do the trick.”

There are several ways to ascend Mauao including the steep Waikorie track, which is mostly stairs, or the more gradual Oruahine track, with both providing a great workout. Once you reach the top, you’re rewarded with stunning views of the world famous Mount Maunganui beach and as far as Kaimai Ranges and the Coromandel Peninsula.

Northern Loop, Abel Tasman Coastal Track

Lux Kakara

This 23km track is a decent day's training in one of New Zealand’s most beautiful locations. Our local Kylie Jones recommends getting dropped off by bus of car at Totaranui and run or walk back to Wainui, her home turf.

“You'll experience lush coastal rata forest, golden sand beaches and clear waters - without the crowds of people you usually get on the southern parts of the track. A stunning day out! A good 4-5 hours walking, but leave time for a swim.”

Matiatia-Church Bay-Oneroa Loop, Waiheke Island

Lux lakeview

Occasionally strenuous but always picturesque, this Church Bay circuit is a favourite with local islander Cathy Cameron. Beginning by the wharf at Matiatia Bay, pass by lookouts, eco projects and historic sites until you arrive in Oneroa village, then return via several reserves.

Mount Kaukau Summit, Wellington

Lux Dublin

This 430 metre summit is a short but strenuous trail that mixes forest, farmland, steps and gravel. It’s a favourite of Debs Metson saying “it’s rugged and interesting terrain. You walk through lush bush and ascend on the way up with stunning views of Wellington city and the harbour basin.” Just on 1 hour 10 minutes return, it’s a great training session to get done after work.

Te Mata Peak, Hawke's Bay

Lux Whakarire

There’s a track for any age or fitness to get to the summit of the ‘sleeping giant.’ For those after a challenge, the Rongokako (blue) Trail is a 5.5km trail round trip of 2 hours 15 minutes. There are some steep sections on the trail which passes through the Big Redwoods Forest and Eucalyptus grove. The summit ridge overlooks an amazing landscape of valleys, rock cliffs and wetlands.
