A Home for Every Season (of the year and of life)

Twenty-two years ago, a young family bought an original 1930s Arts and Crafts home on one of St. Heliers' most established streets. They immediately loved the street presence, the sense of oasis, the glimpse of sea from the front door and thought it might be their forever home.

It was. Just not quite in the form they found it.

It began as a modest renovation. "As we peeled back the layers, we realised we wouldn't be satisfied unless we fully rebuilt it, with attention to every detail," the vendors reflect. "The full rebuild became a true labour of love."

The result stands today as 20 Springcombe Road: white weatherboard, a sculptural roofline of intersecting pitches in deep bronze aluminium, squared glass-enclosed balconies that chase the light from sunrise to sunset.

An old soul. Made entirely new.

Step inside and the transformation reveals itself: light-filled, open, facing the sea. The architect's mastery lies in what you don't see: significant structural engineering, concealed with such precision that the spaces feel light and beautifully proportioned. The result is a home where heritage and modernity are in genuine balance: the 1930s Arts and Crafts character from the street, contemporary living within.

The award-winning kitchen is the natural heart of the home. Designed in partnership with Morgan Cronin and recognised as NKBA 2022 Runner-up Supreme Kitchen Design, it is built for the full rhythm of daily life — multiple people cooking without crowding, meals prepared and shared.

"Breathtaking and beautifully functional," the vendors say. "Especially for entertaining."

Two further kitchens and a butler's pantry complete the picture, the second coming into its own when guests arrive or the lower level is in full swing, the pool house kitchen on hand for lazy summer days. "It was about creating options," the vendors explain, "allowing each space to be used and enjoyed in different ways, depending on the occasion."

Technology runs quietly beneath it all. Lighting, climate, security, media  - all managed remotely and  seamlessly integrated. The pool, spa, and pool robot are controlled from a phone. The home is fully CAT6 hardwired throughout.

Every season of the year finds its space. Summer means the pool and pool house, where bi-fold glass doors open on two sides and the lawn, pool, and living space become one. Autumn and winter are comfortable too with the 1930s fireplace, restored by a local craftsman and paired with beautiful natural stone, anchoring the cooler months.

"We wanted to retain the warmth and ambience of a wood-burning fire," the vendors say. "The local manufacturer restored it, which made it feel even more meaningful." The spa pool draws the evening crowd year-round.

Other spaces offer quiet solitude. "The master suite is a beautiful place to wake each morning -  peaceful, light-filled, and to the morning call of tūī." For those who work from home, the sheltered decks offer "energising and quietly inspiring" spaces. Yoga in the pool house. A workout in the gym. Every space to be enjoyed.

This has been a home for raising children, for milestone birthdays and sports team gatherings, for watching guests relax into rooms that seem to know what they need. "It's been an incredible place to raise our children, full of warmth, calm, and connection." A home for every season of life.

The location holds its own kind of magic. "This part of St. Heliers is truly special," the vendors say. "We're tucked away on the point, facing the sea. The location offers privacy, great neighbours, and a rare sense of calm — while still being close to St. Heliers Bay village and Glover and Churchill Parks." Urban enough for everything. Removed enough to breathe.

"We know we've created something truly special — a home that deserves to be loved just as much as we have loved it."
