Sell with usPiha holds a particular place in our imagination. Just 40 minutes from Auckland, it feels like another world, with its black iron sand, pounding surf, the mountain ranges pressing close and a small, tight-knit surfing community. But to actually live here, immersed in the landscape, with this view, is unbeatable.
Originally conceived by the late Auckland artist-turned-architect Gerard Commissaris, the home was an unfinished project when the current owners took it on. Over six years, they brought the original vision to life – stripping back, rebuilding and reimagining with interior designer Alex Walls and landscape architects Liam Greenway and Xanthe White.
The result is a home of enviable style and comfort. Polished terrazzo floors and floor-to-ceiling glass are softened by sculptural furniture, a warm timber kitchen and a subtle material palette. At its heart, the open living room sits between the ocean on one side and a lush subtropical courtyard on the other. With glass all around, there are moments when it’s difficult to know whether you’re inside or out. The dining room takes that feeling further, glassed on three sides with bush filling the windows.
Another luxury The Louise’s offers is privacy. The home is enveloped by 7.56 acres of native bush, with no close neighbours – a rare degree of seclusion in a beach community as popular as Piha. You can even walk from home to Kitekite Falls without setting foot beyond the estate.
The original bach that occupied the property, affectionately named The Little Louise’s, has also been completely rebuilt and given a new life as a secluded two-bedroom luxury retreat. Now recognised by Airbnb Luxe, it’s become a destination in its own right. The hot tub on the deck certainly helps, particularly when the sun is going down over an almost ridiculously beautiful view of Lion Rock and the Tasman.
Surely the only difficulty of living here is convincing your guests to ever leave.
