A second life in Waimauku

What followed was a long labour of love. The home was settled onto a prime rise, beautifully renovated and extended by eighteen metres, adding two large bedrooms, each with its own ensuite and walk-in wardrobe. Renowned architect Peter Sargisson led the renovation, which features matai floors, three open fireplaces, a formal lounge and a gourmet kitchen, blending timeless character with contemporary comfort. Around eight years later the home was joined by a cottage, also designed by Sargisson.

The grounds, once bare farmland, were planted by hand and grown over the years into the park-like estate they are now: expansive flat lawns, mature trees, established orchards, a large vegetable garden. A bridge crosses to a riverside waterfall and a natural waterhole, a quiet corner for doing very little, with native birdsong for company. Deer still wander down from the neighbouring farm onto the lawns, as if the boundary between estate and country were a suggestion rather than a rule.

It has been, by every measure, the ultimate family retreat. Birthdays, Christmases, the ordinary and the milestone occasions all have a home here. On one memorable day a helicopter set down on the back lawn to carry a bride across to her ceremony on Waiheke Island.

Set on roughly 1.36 hectares along Peak Road's so-called Golden Mile, behind electric gates, the property offers genuine seclusion within an easy commute of the Auckland CBD. The separate cottage adds real flexibility for extended family, guests, a work-from-home base or rental income, and a four-bay shed and three-car garage cover the practical end of country living.
