Twenty-one years ago, two brothers stood on a hillside with a vision to build an inspiring and pristine retreat for their families. "Whare Aroha" grew by hand, of earth and wood, epitomising all that is special about Golden Bay; living with respect, harmony, co-operatively and lightly on the planet.
Designed to support ten souls, there are four autonomous adobe units and a large communal lodge for eating and relaxing. The views are quite simply epic - encompassing the sweeping arch of Farewell Spit, the bright blue waters of the bay, and forest-clad hills extending for 50 hectares directly back into the Kahurangi National Park.
Pure water flows from the spring-fed creeks high above the house and a new solar power system provides ample energy, with a windmill as a backup. The adobe bricks have all been handmade and designs take into account passive solar energy and feng-shui principles. Macrocarpa, matai, jarrah poles and beams, combine with the soothing warmth of earthen walls and roofs. The retreat will be sold turn-key, fully furnished, just walk in and enjoy. There's room for a garden, as well as beach access to the sea for a morning swim, fishing or an ocean kayak.
Pakawau is a nature lover's paradise. Whare Aroha has that environmental and conservation vibe which attracts people to this glorious part of New Zealand. The wild beauty of Farewell Spit, Wharariki Beach and Westhaven Inlet lie to the north, charming Collingwood and Takaka to the south.
Prepare to be impressed, and inspired, and allow a day to explore this extraordinary location following your private appointment to view.
