Husband-and-wife sales associates Carl and Vanessa are no-nonsense experts in selling Lakes District properties.

What do you enjoy most about being part of the NZSIR team?
C: We like being part of a motivated high performance team that strives for results and always doing it better. The brand is aspirational and relates well to our clients from all around the world. The country market is where we specialise, where it can take longer to buy and sell so we get to know our clients really well, which we enjoy.

Tell us about your background before joining NZSIR:
V: Carl initially worked as a chef and travelled the world employing that skill. I started out my career in IT recruitment in the UK. We moved back to New Zealand in 1999, bought a 50-acre farm near Arrow Junction and started an equestrian and accommodation business on our property. In 2009 we entered real estate and have enjoyed it ever since.

What are your secrets to achieving top sales results?
V: My mantras are: you only get what you put in and do what you say you are going to do by the specified time or sooner. Specialise in a particular area of the market and know it inside out.

Can you give us an insight into the Southern Lakes property market?
C: At the moment prices are fairly static in the country market but there is a shortage of listings and we still have more buyers than sellers. If you take the 10-year view when buying, you’ll do okay.

How do you like to spend your leisure time?
C: We have 10 horses on our property - Vanessa and our daughter enjoy riding and are often away with them competing. I prefer horsepower and have an interest in old cars.

If you could invite any three people to dinner, who would they be?
V: Simon Cowell, James Corden and Michelle Obama.
C: Billy Connelly, Michael Parkinson and Ricky Gervais.
