The Homestead Story

The Homestead at Lake Hayes is truly a project of passion, preservation and renewal realised by owners Kirsty Mactaggart, from Scotland, and her British husband Justin Crane. Originally built in 1906, the house was owned by a few well-known Queenstown families before falling into the hands of property developers. After several unsuccessful commercialisation endeavours and years of neglect, the estate gradually fell into disrepair until Kirsty discovered it in 2014. She instantly saw its potential. “I fell in love with the location, the proportions of the building, but most importantly the trees,” Kirsty told us, referring to the 100-year-old Wellingtonias and heritage fruit trees lining the property.

Kirsty and Justin began renovation in 2015, with the vision of transforming the rundown estate into a modern and luxurious space, whilst preserving the historical features that attracted them to the property in the first place. “She was a beautiful old lady, and it was important to protect her,” Kirsty says.

The couple engaged Andrew Patterson of Patterson Architects – renowned for their modern architecture (The Hills Clubhouse), but also sympathetic to historic preservation. Andrew’s work helped to bring a modern feel to The Homestead, like opening up the traditional long, dark corridor with a skylight, enhancing the panoramic lake views.

All of the original features of The Homestead have been carefully restored and creatively reimagined by Kirsty, Justin and their architecture team. The last steps are to restore the property’s original woolshed and stables with the help of a heritage architect. The end result of The Homestead’s restoration is simply stunning and exemplary of true New Zealand luxury.

Lakefront Luxury

Rows of 100-year-old Wellingtonia trees flank the avenue leading up to The Homestead’s 15 acres of absolute lakefront land, overlooking picturesque Lake Hayes. On entering the house, you feel instantly at home – a dynamic floorplan with a variety of living spaces and cosy spots to take in the breath-taking mountain and lake views.

Kirsty’s passion for architecture, art and design shines throughout this luxury rental with bespoke furnishings and curated artworks from around the world. The main living area features a large Hamptons-style kitchen, spacious open-plan dining area and stylish lounge with a grand piano. An airy corridor takes you to the library at the front of the house which overlooks the manicured lawn and rose gardens and out across to the lake.

The property boasts five bedrooms with the Master located in the original wing of the historic homestead, featuring a private ensuite bathroom with a statement copper bathtub. A further two ensuite bedrooms sit on the west end of the property and – one with twin beds themed to entertain children and secret door leading back to the main house. The two remaining loft style bedrooms share a bathroom in the second wing of the house with high pitched ceilings, providing ample private space for further guests.

Perched on the edge of stunning Lake Hayes, The Homestead offers endless enjoyment and entertainment – direct access to the Lake Hayes walking track, a life-sized chess set, petanque court, a sleek outdoor swimming pool with a floating fireplace, and a home gym overlooking the lake.
